Avril Eggleston is the mother of Alex and Allison Eggleston. Avril fell in love with Anthony at an unspecified year. The two watched Kaiju Mechajaw Returns on their first date.

She is a talented programmer who (presumably) worked for Pacific Chime, leading an unknown project. Before 1999, Michael says she brought internet to Frankton. This job often leaves her away from home, forcing her to use e-mail or letters to communicate with Alex. However, she gets laid off from her job, leaving her out of work. She asks Alex to get a job to help with the bills, but he never applies himself enough to get one. Despite Avril seemingly having a lot of free time in this period, she interestingly isn't seen around the house again until November 1999, when she gets hired to work at Moon Macrosystems to fix the Y2K bug in their programs.

Personality

In Alex's story, she is portrayed as caring for Alex and having great faith in him, such trusting him to do the groceries or get a job, but perhaps her trust is misplaced as her son often fails her. In Nameless' story, Avril appears to be verbally abusive to Allison, swearing at her and treating her extremely poorly. This is almost certainly because Allison is the product of an affair her husband Anthony had. When it comes to Alex, she babies him and is overly protective.

She may uphold more "traditional values", as she freaks out that Alex is hanging out with The Essentia 2000 specifically because of her green hair. She may also dislike breaking the "rules" or going against authority figures, as it is mentioned by a Junctioned Self that Anthony made fun of Alex for being "too much like Mom" when he refused to enter the mall after his Dad told him not to.

Relationships

Alex

Avril is Alex's single mother. She spent her savings on his and Allison's college education, spending extra on Alex's due to the extra semesters he stayed. Avril leaves a note requesting Alex pick up groceries after he returns from college, which Alex views as "barking orders" at him. When she is fired from her job at Pacific Chime, she asks Alex to get a job now that he has a bachelor's degree. This upsets Alex, who is unable, or unwilling, to find a job around Frankton.

Avril treats Alex like a child even after he returns from his longer-than-expected college education. She exclaims how he is "always getting taller" and bakes him cookies. She also makes him keep his video games at home before he leaves for school. When Alex disappears in Essentia's Mind Dungeon for days, Avril gets extremely worried and calls the police. While Avril seems to spoil Alex, Alex sees her as demanding.

When Alex was young, Avril was already protective of him. She made sure he always got what he wanted when he wanted it, from his favorite movies to his favorite food to his favorite toys. When she believed he had vision problems, she made her then husband, Anthony, take Alex to get prescription glasses. When Anthony suggests Alex has something strange about him, Avril sees it as an attack on herself. Anthony tells Alex that he's "just like [his] mom" because he "push[es] everyone away." Avril responds by telling Alex that Anthony doesn't mean it, and that Alex has a good heart even if there are "prettier people" than him.

Alex's relationship to his mother may have contributed to Alex's conceptualization of the Essentia. Jocasta's existence may imply Alex has some form of Oedipus complex.

Allison

Allison is Avril's adopted (step?) daughter. Allison was born of an affair Anthony had with another woman, presumably with Candy Mancer. In Y2K II, it is implied that she was renamed Allison from Carrie, metaphorically or otherwise, by Avril after Anthony first brought her into the Eggleston house.

Avril views Allison as her "albatross" and a "bastard," constantly treating her with contempt. Unlike with Alex, Avril is very demanding of Allison. Avril makes Allison keep the peace in the family by catering to everyone's needs (e.g., picking a movie for everybody, playing the movie, making Alex stop crying, cleaning dishes, making popcorn, getting Avril the "memory card," picking up their cat, etc.).

When Avril yells at Allison, the latter immediately apologizes and tries to placate her. Avril does not allow Allison to wear her clothes. She also gets angry when Allison has nightmares.

Anthony

Anthony is Avril's ex-husband who abandoned her to care for Alex and Allison alone when Alex was a child. He seems very contemptuous of her. The two are implied to get into mutually physical disputes, as Anthony tells Allison to go on the computer with her headphones on after they begin to argue, and Anthony says Avril gives him a "clean sweep beat down" after getting upset with him. At one point in their (presumed) marriage, Anthony cheats on Avril with (presumably) Candy Mancer, fathering Allison. He views both children as "mistakes."

In Deviation Perspective II: Onism Man At The Center, Anthony refers to Avril to Alex as his "bitch wife" and says "her soul's rotten." He also tells him that his "mom is a bad person" who "pretends to be so enlightened" but that she abuses him in private.

When Avril yells and curses at Allison, Anthony defends her and says she's only a kid.

At some point after he leaves, he appears in the Eggleston house looking around for money while hiding from Avril.

Anthony is supposed to send monthly child support checks to Avril after abandoning the family. He sometimes fails to do so.

The Essentia 2000

Avril is suspicious of the Essentia 2000 due to her green hair. (stub)

Story

When Alex arrives from college, Avril leaves him a grocery list while she is away at work. She notices the fridge is still empty, and assumes he simply ate all the food, as he's a growing boy. stub

Avril appears as an actress alongside actors portraying Anthony, Baby Alex, and Allison in a sitcom-like scene recorded by Kisage X in the Eggleston household. stub

Deviation Perspective II: Onism Man At The Center

Because the narration of Deviation Perspective II shifts, it is difficult to discern when "Mom" refers to Avril specifically. However, Avril is directly described in a Part 2 scene.

The narrator for this scene is presumably Anthony. He says Avril had been telling him to bring Alex to a doctor for prescription glasses for years, and he took out a loan to finally do so. Anthony doesn't understand why this is important, saying Alex only needs to be able to hear to enjoy the TV. After the doctor tells Anthony that Alex's eyes are fine and shows up to the house without prescription glasses, Avril gives him a "clean sweep beat down."

According to Anthony, any criticism against Alex "was seen as a slight [sic]" against Avril.

Avril is on sleeping pills, lorazepam, which are strong enough to make her sleep through the noise of one of Anthony's tantrums. It is unclear why she is taking them, and Anthony implies she is taking more than is typical.

When she wakes up from one of her deep sleeps, she finds Alex caked in dried blood and asleep at a strange mess of a party scene. She examines his still body to ensure he is alive. She frantically cleans the room to make sure Alex isn't alarmed when he wakes up. She wonders if she hosted a party and forgot due to her pills, but can't find any evidence of related purchases. This is the last direct mention of Avril in the story.

Trivia

• An NPC in Burger Joint mentions being laid off by Avril, which is ironic since Avril herself gets laid off not too long after.
• Michael mentions that it was Avril who got internet working in Frankton.
